Annotation

A one-pot Strecker-type cyanation of ethylenediamine with acetone cyanohydrin (or acetone and an inorganic cyanide) affords 2,2′-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanediyl))bis(2-methylpropanenitrile) (4) in 68–94% yield, depending on the cyanating agent, solvent and dehydrating salt. Complete alkaline or acidic hydrolysis of both nitrile groups of 4 gives the new bis-α-amino acid 2,2′-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanediyl))bis(2-methylpropanoic acid) (5) in 84–93% yield. The structures were confirmed by IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The antifungal activity of 4 and 5 was evaluated at the Central Chemical Laboratory of the Shurtan Oil and Gas Production Department on samples taken from absorber columns, filters, process columns and absorber trays against three micromycetes (Alternaria tenuis, Fusarium vasinfectum and Verticillium dahliae). Complete suppression of fungal growth was observed in 5 of 24 test combinations, and the enterprise reported a 78–81% efficiency against corrosion-inducing microorganisms. Compounds 4 and 5 are therefore promising candidates for inhibitors of microbiologically influenced corrosion in oil and gas equipment.
