This study investigated the chemical composition of sludge waste from the Dehkanabad Potash Plant, the characteristics of its water-soluble and solid mineral fractions, and the changes induced by sulfuric acid treatment. The elemental and oxide compositions of the dry sample and the aqueous fraction were determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The dry sample contained 37.5 % SiO2, 12.8 % MgO, 12.5 % Al2O3, 11.8 % SO3, and 9.19 % CaO. In the aqueous fraction, the content of SO3, Na2O, and Cl was 37.5 %, 29.4 %, and 22.2 %, respectively. These results indicated that the aqueous fraction was enriched with soluble salt components, while the dry sample contained substantial amounts of silicon-, magnesium-, and aluminum-containing mineral components. The solid mineral residue separated after water treatment was subsequently treated with sulfuric acid. Changes in its crystalline structure, chemical bonding, particle morphology, and elemental composition were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. After acid treatment, the absorption bands associated with carbonate groups decreased in intensity, while characteristic sulfate-related bands appeared. Electron microscopy revealed the degradation of larger particles and an increase in the abundance of smaller particles with porous structures. Elemental analysis showed that the mass fraction of magnesium decreased from 3.27 % to 1.12 %, while that of calcium decreased from 8.12 % to 1.06 %. In contrast, the sulfur content increased from 1.86 % to 16.34 %. These findings demonstrate changes in the chemical and mineral composition of the sludge waste during sequential water and sulfuric acid treatment.
