Annotation

Chemical modification of a crosslinked granular 1-vinylimidazole–acrylonitrile–divinylbenzene (VIm–AN–DVB) terpolymer was performed using 3-bromopropan-1-amine hydrobromide in ethanol at 60 °C for 48 h under nitrogen. The bromide-containing intermediate was subsequently converted into the chloride working form by treatment with 0.1 N HCl for 24 h. Comparison of the FTIR spectra of the parent and chemically modified materials showed retention of the nitrile band (2246.20 and 2244.27 cm⁻¹, respectively) and spectral changes in the imidazole- and C–N-related regions consistent with N-alkylation. The material in the chloride working form exhibited a static capacity of 3.73 meq/g as determined using 0.1 N NaOH. The resulting granular material combines polar nitrile units, imidazolium sites, and terminal amino groups.
